Dorothea Jacobs Grant Common
the site of the ogunquit heritage museum, this is a lovely park with a large open area and winding paths through wooded areas and wild flower gardens. a visit at the end of june will envelop you with glorious day lilies and the 18th century garden at the museum. lilacs, bee balm, peonies, phlox, and the scent of lavender, sage and thyme fill the landscape with beauty and fragrance. 18th century gardens were often very practical. herbs were most important, but there was always room for bright colored flowers for enjoyment.

the mission of the great works regional land trust is to conserve the value of our natural, historic, agricultural, forestry, scenic and recreational resources. they pursue this mission by holding property and conservation easements where these values are present and by promoting the need and value of conservation through education and other related activities. their work is concentrated in the southern maine towns of eliot, south berwick, berwick, north berwick, wells and ogunquit. since their inception in 1986, the trust has completed 84 projects conserving over 4100 acres.
Beach Plum Farm
one of the gwrlt’s local projects, is a slice of life as it used to be on the coast with a view of the dunes from its property edge along route 1. on this 22-acre site on the northern end of ogunquit you can see the remnants of an old new england salt-water farm, natural landscapes and wildlife habitat. the farm hosts more than 50 community garden plots as well as a walking loop which circles the fields and gardens. down by the salt marsh, you can see bayberry, beach plums and a variety of coastal birds. benches along the path provide spots to sit and contemplate. the loop walk can be completed at a leisurely pace in a half-hour.
Laudholm Farm National Estuarine Sanctuary

the reserve has seven miles of walking trails, five scenic overlooks, a quiet beach where endangered least terns and piping plovers nest, and several historic farm buildings, which have been magnificently restored. the buildings are used for exhibits, classrooms, a research laboratory, auditorium, and offices.

the highest peak in southern york county at 692 feet, mount agamenticus , located just over 4 miles off route 1 in york, provides exceptional wildlife habitat and opportunities for hiking, biking, horseback riding and nature trails that range from easy to difficult.

rachel carson national wildlife refuge was established in 1966 in cooperation with the state of maine to protect valuable salt marshes and estuaries for migratory birds. located along 50 miles of coastline in york and cumberland counties, the refuge consists of eleven divisions between kittery and cape elizabeth. it will contain approximately 14,600 acres when land acquisition is complete. the proximity of the refuge to the coast and its location between the eastern deciduous forest and the boreal forest creates a composition of plants and animals not found elsewhere in maine. major habitat types present on the refuge include forested upland, barrier beach/dune, coastal meadows, tidal salt marsh, and the distinctive rocky coast.
The Youth Enrichment Center at Hilton-Winn Farm

a nonprofit organization dedicated to positive youth development, nature-based education, and stewardship of the unique agricultural landscape of new england. this is a king’s grant farm dating back to the 1700s. the farm’s current 48 acres of rolling fields and forests, along with the recently renovated house and barn, form the unique facilities to achieve our mission: “ to provide a country farm experience to enrich the hearts, minds, and spirits of children.” the nature and farm-based education programs serve thousands of children, teens, and families from southern maine, coastal new hampshire, and the merrimack valley, massachusetts.
Vaughn Woods

this small, tucked away park is one you will not want to miss when traveling in southern maine. it may be a little tricky to find, but well worth the effort. the park is nestled back in a small new england river village graced with tidy clapboard houses. vaughan woods offers 250 acres of historic and woodland exploration. shipbuilders first developed this site along the salmon falls river.

this 18th century cape with original architectural features consists of a keeping room, a best room, a borning room, a back bedroom with “indian” shutters, a central chimney with three fireplaces, a buttery with a back staircase, a front foyer with a unique federal staircase leading to two small bedrooms in the garret. throughout the cape there remains most of the original paneling, flooring, hardware and mantel. exhibits at the museum feature maritime history including coastal trade and fishing in early ogunquit; the front room is devoted to the artist colony, schools and artists’ paintings. open june – october, tuesday – saturday 1pm-5pm. free admission.
